Costa Rica

Costa Rica MapsChristopher Columbus was the first European to set eyes on the densely forested coastline of a land he was later to name Costa Rica, or Rich Coast. Although resulting from the mistaken belief that there was abundant gold to be found, the name could equally have applied to the fabulous wealth of Costa Rica’s natural history.

With the highest biodiversity of any country its size, this small section of the Central American isthmus boasts two dramatic coasts, Pacific and Caribbean, between which a volcanic mountain chain runs the length of the country.

The many various tropical habitats contain a fantastical array of bird, mammal, reptile, amphibian and invertebrate species, and the two coasts possess beautiful beaches, huge mangroves and extensive offshore waters teeming with marine life.

Costa Rica Family HolidaysCoupled with a wide range of family accommodation, friendly locals, excellent service and sound infrastructure, Costa Rica meets the highest of standards for a first class natural history family holiday.

Fabulous Family-Friendly Costa Rica is hard to beat for its wide diversity and exceptional value; for adventurous families with older children, Costa Rica’s Wonderful Wildlife For Families reveals the best wildlife habitats to be found in Costa Rica; certain exceptional locations, such as Arenal volcano, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio, have been perennially popular with families visiting Costa Rica, and these are brought together into one classic programme – Classic Costa Rica For The Family; whilst Naturally Costa Rica – Family De Luxe is an unashamedly luxurious family tour staying in carefully selected hotels and encompassing a wide diversity of habitats and activities.

When to Go

The conventional time to visit is between November and May, when the weather is usually drier – perfect for Christmas holidays. However, April to August can be equally attractive since, although there may be a higher incidence of rain, the forests are more lush, wildlife more active and visible and turtles visit the Caribbean coast. Costa Rica can be thought of as a year-round destination, although it is best to avoid September and October – the main hurricane season months.

It would be very hard to beat this tour for its wide diversity and exceptional value.  From the wildlife-rich lowland rainforests of the Caribbean coast, ascend to an historical ranch-cum-lodge at 11,000 feet to marvel at a forest-clad, active volcano whose crater can be reached by horse, bike or on foot. Lastly, travel to the dry forest zone of Nicoya and a well-run beach resort with great family villas, excellent food and friendly service. A fine recipe for good memories. Find out more...
